The MDI file format was typically used for saving documents as images, and the full name of the file type is Microsoft Document Imaging format. MDI is a high-definition graphics format using tags, and MDI files can be converted back into Word documents using optical character recognition software. Users could previously create MDI files using Microsoft Office Document Imaging, which was included in Microsoft Office XP, 2003 and 2007.
